Ladder participants from the Gippsland programs made the trip up to Melbourne for an exciting day touring the MCG, one of Australia's most iconic sports stadiums, and the Australian Sports Museum. This visit provided a unique opportunity for the young people to network, make new friends and learn about the history and behind-the-scenes activities of the AFL.

Our young people enjoyed learning about the rich history of the AFL and engaging in interactive quizzes at various memorabilia stations. The tour guide shared fascinating insights, including the fact that the AFL Grand Final at the MCG attracts around 100,000 spectators.

Ladder was founded by three AFL players in 2007, and players continue to be the heart of the organisation, contributing financially, as volunteers, staff, board members, advocates, and mentors. Our young people were proud to know of this legacy and that the proceeds from the replica Premiership Cup pins that Ladder sells during the AFL Finals Series support the life-changing programs that they participate in.

The day also allowed Ladder staff, some of whom are former AFL players, to connect with the participants and share their experiences of playing at an elite level. This added a personal touch, inspiring the young people and making the experience even more memorable.

“It was cool we got to meet Sam, who organises things like this for us and getting the players involved with Ladder. He’s a legend.” said one participant.

For many of the participants, this was their first visit to the MCG, and it was a dream come true for football fans who would not have had the opportunity to attend such an event without Ladder’s support. The excitement was palpable as they toured the grounds, interacted with each other and made new friends.

“My Ladder program was life-changing, and I’m so glad I still stay connected through the Alumni program and get to come to events like this.” said another participant.

The day at the MCG and the Australian Sports Museum was a fantastic experience for all involved. It reinforced the connection of Ladder’s legacy with the AFL and the importance of community, support, and shared experiences in fostering personal growth and meaningful opportunities.
